Whilst there is no exact formula for success, there are some simple steps that you can take to prepare and give yourself the best chance of being invited back for a second stage or even offered the position. Read on for our list of top tips for best interview practice:
- PREPARE FOR INTERVIEW. At Clark Legal, we will provide you with as much information as possible to help you prepare for interview. It is always useful to do your own research into the firm, including the people with whom you will be meeting, to ensure you have a thorough understanding of the business, their ethos etc.
- ARRIVE IN GOOD TIME. If attending a face-to-face interview, it is advisable to arrive within plenty of time to ensure you are not feeling flustered. Plan your route in advance, allowing additional time for public transport or delays to your journey. If you are attending a remote meeting via Zoom or similar, it is always advisable to check you have the correct connection details and are able to join the calls a few minutes ahead of time in case there are any technical issues.
- FIRST IMPRESSIONS COUNT. Whether you are interviewing face to face or via Zoom, it is important to make a good first impression. Wearing smart office attire and a warm, friendly disposition can go a long way to helping you appear confident and at ease.
- BE PREPARED TO BACK UP YOUR ANSWERS WITH EXAMPLES. If you are a confident communicator or have excellent client care skills, be prepared to demonstrate these qualities at the interview. Think back on a time in which your communication skills were essential, or how you demonstrated excellent client care in the office and talk about these.
- ASK QUESTIONS. Whilst it is not essential to ask questions at the end of an interview, it is always good practice to have at least one ready just in case. It could be something as simple as ‘What are the parking arrangements?’ or ‘When does the holiday year run from?’
- BE POSITIVE! There may be a number of reasons as to why you are looking to leave your current employer, but whatever those reasons, it is always important to remain positive. It is all too easy to become negative when discussing workloads or issues with management/colleagues, but potential employers do not take too kindly to hearing a candidate speak disparagingly about their current employer.
